Somewhere Between Here and There

Somewhere Between Here is a conceptual album campaign for artist PinkPantheress. Inspired by London’s transit system and the visual storytelling in A Girl Like Me, the project imagines a fictional album centered on themes of longing, memory, and emotional distance. Through branding, packaging, motion, and environmental design, I explored how a single visual identity could extend across an entire music release.PinkPantheress’s visual identity is often associated with early internet aesthetics and Y2K nostalgia. While these references are iconic, they can also limit the way her work is interpreted.I wanted to develop a campaign that captured the emotional atmosphere of her music without relying on familiar internet-era imagery. Instead, I looked to London’s transit system as a visual language for movement, connection, and absence.

Somewhere Between Here and There

Somewhere Between Here and There follows someone navigating a relationship through places rather than destinations. Stations, routes, and transfers become recurring symbols of longing, uncertainty, and the feeling of always being in transit.Transit systems are built to connect people, but they also embody waiting, departures, missed connections, and return journeys. By incorporating route maps, station signage, ticket ephemera, and wayfinding graphics, I translated those experiences into a visual identity that mirrors the emotional rhythm of the album.

What is ALTER EGO?

Alter Ego is a five-spread editorial magazine exploring how musicians use alternate identities as creative tools rather than simple stage personas. Instead of treating alter egos as branding, I examined them as devices for performance, protection, anonymity, and reinvention through the work of Doechii, Janelle Monáe, The Weeknd, and MF DOOM.

Text

Alter egos are often just understood as branding rather than artistic devices.

Popular conversations typically reduce alter egos to costumes, stage names, or aesthetic changes. In reality, alter egos have long functioned as creative devices that allow artists to negotiate identity, process emotion, challenge expectation, and construct entirely new worlds. Rather than existing as separate personalities, they often reveal aspects of the self that everyday life cannot fully express.Whether it’s a mask, a fictional character, or a new name, an alter ego creates distance between the artist and the person performing. That distance becomes a space for experimentation, allowing musicians to embody confidence, confront trauma, critique society, or tell stories that might feel impossible under their own identity.

Each artist represents a different function of the alter ego.

Alter Ego examines the distinct relationship between artist and their persona* Doechii explores fluid identity.
* Janelle Monáe imagines liberation through Afrofuturism.
* The Weeknd questions whether a persona can consume its creator.
* MF DOOM demonstrates how anonymity can become artistic identity.

Text

Visually, I wanted Alter Ego to feel less like traditional editorial design and more like a DIY music zine.Alter Ego borrows from punk publications, underground hip-hop magazines, and scrapbook collage, combining halftone textures, distressed typography, hand-drawn annotations, and layered cut-outs. While every spread develops its own visual language, a consistent color palette and typographic system ties the publication together.

Life After Death

acrylic and gold leaf on wood panel
16" x 20"
2023

The exposed bones emphasize the process of decomposition in this work. As the body decomposes, the organic matter from the remains fertilize the soil, stimulating the growth of new life, such as plants, which in turn promotes the growth of other organisms. This process is a reminder of the cycle of life and death and a reminder of the importance of respecting the environment and its resources, as well as portraying death as not such an ugly occurrence. The bones also suggest that all humans must eventually succumb to death and that the cycle will continue.

Mind of Music

acrylic and yarn on canvas
20" x 24"
2023

This painting captures the unacknowledged, compulsive nature of music. Music releases Dopamine throughout the brain, which stimulates the right side of the brain and greatly affects motivation, focus, and attitude. The usage of the headphone wire and complementary hues violet and yellow highlights how well the two people go together and represents their bond. The continuous loop of music, when activated by the play button, symbolizes the never-ending cycle of addiction and how it affects the two individuals. The background of the piece is filled with a variety of different newspaper articles that represent the ever-changing and uncertain nature of music.
